A very important part of every GrapeSox season is getting families to host the top prospects in America. Grapesox players from throughout the United States stay in families homes during their two month “short season”.
Every summer, the GrapeSox needs 20 or so families to host the players in their homes, where they live as if they were “one of the family”. It is one of the most rewarding experiences of our times to host these young people who, with a little luck, will soon be playing professional baseball. And, of course, host families follow the players’ career as he advances from the GrapeSox, back to their schools, then on to pro ball later in their careers.
Potential host families fill out an application and then are interviewed by GrapeSox staff. At that time, if both parties are in agreement, the GrapeSox assign a player to the host family for the summer. Host families responsibilities include feeding the players, getting them too and from the ball park, and of course cheering on your “favorite” GrapeSox. Host families meet the players parents – if possible – and the GrapeSox provide to host families all of the pertinent information related to that player. Medical records, doctor information, and contact info is routinely provided to host families to have at their disposal.
Host families receive a number of amenities courtesy of the GrapeSox. Season tickets behind the GrapeSox bench; VIP parking; and special consideration invitations to all Grapesox VIP events are just some of the perks for hosting a player.
Most importantly, it is a lifelong friendship that is born out of hosting one of America’s finest baseball prospects. In the past, families have had a chance to watch their “player” make it to the Big Leagues; or play in the Olympics; or become stars in the College World Series. In almost every case, the players “second family” is invited to join the fun as these young people reach their goals and further their careers.
If you have an interest in hosting a player now or in the future, contact Bruce Gallaudet at the GrapeSox office at (209) 339-4028.
